dive into our world of musical experimentation

where each session unveils unexpected treasures

We started recording our rehearsals and upload them as improv sessions, because we realised, that they are not that much different from our other performances. They are however lower production value, so we'd like to release it for you for free.

This page is where we keep you up-to date on the latest sessions, and give a little context about what we're working on, what we experiment with and what results we have.

first session

This was our first recorded improv session, which took place on 2022 November 18th.

On this session we experimented with improvising music with a timely predetermined form. We used a stopwatch to indicate the change from one part to the other, and we discussed the length of the parts beforehand. The logic internally within the parts (e.g. stays monotone; gradually builds up or down), and between each other, forming a larger form (e.g. the parts build on each other; they following are complementary to each other) was decided beforehand as well.

One of the two pieces that came out of this is Amethyst Fern, which is a fairly simple 7 minute piece, with two parts, 3 and 4 minutes; the second, longer part builds on the musical material established in the first one, forming a whole.

The other piece is Teal Oak for which we decided the length of the parts to be the first six numbers of the Fibonacci-sequence, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, trying to always build on the tension the last part established. This made that the further we go in the piece, the more energy is present, but also the tension is held longer before proceeding to the next section with even more energy, giving the whole a really natural build-up of sustained tension. We really liked this effect, and a more refined version of this form and concept made it into our album later on.
